Google has officially launched their new cloud product, Google Drive. They have merged their existing Google Docs system with the new product giving users 5GB of free storage, with the ability to easily upgrade to 25GB and 100GB for a small monthly fee.

There is also a desktop client for Windows and Mac. You will need Google Drive active for your account before you will be able to access the link.

It appears Gmail is also in the process of being upgraded from 7.5GB to 10GB as part of the new launch.

The Android app update should be pushed through automatically to update your existing Google Docs app.

Even with this new Google Cloud product, the best cloud backup for your computer is still Cloudr!

Let’s hope it is a little better implemented than their desktop ‘Kies’ software!

We run the Cloudr backup Briefcase here on our Macbook Air, PC (Windows XP) and 20″ iMac. This keeps all our work files in sync no matter where we are in the world, or what device we are using at the time.

Once you install and setup your Briefcase, you will see it ‘mounted’ on your desktop as a virtual hard drive.

Once you open your Briefcase it will appear as a normal folder on your computer:

Any files that are still in the cloud and not stored directly on your computer can easily be downloaded and opened. You also have the option to view the file online rather than downloading it:

This gives us the perfect, flexible setup that we require to work on-site with clients, and still have access to all of old important files which are stored safely in the cloud.

It was started by the guys over at Reddit. You can also read up on what Reddit backup on a daily basis (1.2TB!!).

Not only is it important to make sure all of your files are being backed up correctly, you need to make sure that you are able to successfully restore your files also!

There is nothing worse than thinking you have covered yourself, only to find that you can’t actually restore your own files.

There is a stat that is commonly used online that shows over 60% of users have faced irreplaceable data loss. In my own personal experience, I have had entire hard drives crash, and even my work laptop stolen out of my car.

Previously individuals and companies use to make a weekly take or USB hard drive backup. This means you can lose up to 6 days worth of data! With the speeds of the Internet these days, it has become easier and easier to backup your important files online and up to the second.

Simply install our Cloudr Online Backup Software, and let it work away quietly in the background. If your desktop or laptop hard drive did crash, you will be able to safely retrieve all of your important documents and photos again. Set and forget!

You can install extend this functionality by using our Business Backup packages. These allow you to access your files remotely, and even share entire drives with other employees or family members!

There are lots of rumours floating around currently about what Google has in store for it’s long awaited Cloud drive – possibly to be called ‘Google Drive’.

The following screenshot apparently showed up for a GeekWire user:

The supposed favicon has also surfaced for the upcoming Google Drive.

A few people have been pulling Google’s code apart, and found references to ‘Open With’ hinting towards giving 3rd party apps access to their online cloud drive also.

Google has something big coming.
